Dr Robert Johnson
Senior Research Scientist
I’m a senior research scientist leading a team focused on forecast improvement and algorithm development across the Earth sciences — from ocean to atmosphere. My work centres on enhancing the accuracy and usefulness of environmental forecasts through model post-processing, ensemble techniques, and machine learning.
My research background is broad and interdisciplinary, spanning from Antarctic phytoplankton photophysiology and satellite oceanography to AI applications in meteorology. Over the years, I’ve led multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and engineers, working on projects that integrate data science, numerical modelling, and operational systems. I contribute to international collaborations on probabilistic forecasting and post-processing, and my team’s innovations have delivered Australia’s first AI-driven post-processing system for public weather forecasts, replacing legacy statistical methods and modernising the weather forecast provided to millions of Australians.
Beyond research, I’m passionate about ensuring that science delivers real-world impact. I’ve worked with partners across sectors — including aviation, maritime, and emergency management — to make sure our advances support better decisions and safer outcomes. I live in Hobart, Tasmania, and use this blog to share ideas, reflections, and updates from the intersection of science, leadership, and technology.
